We do not run a sleep lab, and we will not pretend to. Our reviews are research: we collect what is published about a mattress, compare it against others in its size and price range, and write down what that means for you.
What we look at
- Construction
The layers, materials and overall height the maker lists. This is the base of every comparison, because it explains most of how a mattress behaves.
- Comfort
Firmness and feel as described by the maker and by buyers, and which sleeping positions that tends to suit.
- Motion isolation
Whether buyers who share a bed report being woken when a partner moves.
- Heat
Whether the materials and buyer reports point to a mattress that sleeps warm or stays cool.
- Trial and warranty
How long you have to try the mattress and what the warranty actually covers.
- Value
What you get for the price, compared with others in the same size and budget.
What you should check yourself
Mattress makers change models, prices and terms. Before you buy, confirm the current specifications and the trial and warranty terms on the seller's page. Some of the models we cover may have been updated since we wrote about them.
How we make money
Links to makers and sellers pass through our own /recommends/ addresses, and we may earn a commission on what you buy. That never costs you more. Read the affiliate disclosure for the details.
